permanent way along this Praya, and in view of the large ex-

penditure that would be involved if the ways were laid and

subsequently lifted, I have had no other alternative open to

me but to authorise the raising of the roadway forthwith in

anticipation of your approval.

I have already asked the Legislative

Council to vote the sum of $28,000 for the cost of this work

- a sum the greater portion of which will ultimately be recover-

ed from the Marine Lot holders and I have now to ask your

covering authority for my action in this matter.

I may mention that the total estimated

cost of the reclamation is $5,107,200 of which the Govern-

ment share (unfortunately a small one as it owns very little

of the Marine frontage) is $200,000 approximately.

As this expenditure will be spread over a

number of years the liability of the Government is a comparative

-ly small one.
